Reiki, (pronounced ray-key), is a method of healing that was developed by Dr. Mikao Usui, in the 1920’s in Japan. According to the story that has been passed down among Reiki teachers, Usui was intrigued by the idea of healing sick people by the power of touch. During his intense studies, he had a spiritual experience on Mount Kurama, which enabled him to self-heal with his own hands by becoming aware of and tapping into the universal life-force energy. Hence the name, Reiki, which literally means “universal life-force energy” in Japanese. Fortunately, the Reiki Method of Healing has been preserved. Today, there are thousands of Reiki practitioners all around the world.
How does Reiki work? According to recent discoveries in quantum physics, everything in the universe vibrates to “ki”, this unseen, universal life-force energy. This energy also flows in your body and within the energy around your body called your auric field. Basically, when you’re healthy, balanced and feeling great, life-force energy is flowing harmoniously in all areas of your being i.e. you feel wonderful physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. When you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, physical illness or problems within any area of your life, this “ki” or life-force energy is blocked or weakened. Reiki Practitioners are trained to be channels for universal life-force energy in order to accelerate the body’s ability to self-heal in all areas of a person’s being. It’s important to acknowledge that Reiki is not a replacement for medical treatment but compliments it beautifully.
